Today, 30 June 2011, the South African Reserve Bank launched acommemorative R5 circulation coin in celebration of the 90th Anniversary of the South African Reserve Bank. The coin was minted by the South African Mint.The obverse (front) of the coin contains the country’s Coat of Arms. The reverse (back) of the coin reflects a theme comprising the following coins and banknote: 1.   The well known use of the motif ofSt. George and the dragon which was used on Britishgold sovereigns andcrowns from 1817 to the present day. 2.   The R5 coin which celebrated the former President, Mr Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday.3.   The Natura coin reflecting the black rhinoceros is included to highlight the plight of rhino at the hands of poachers. 4.   The 20c coin reflecting one of the country’s national symbols, the king protea.5.   The farthing, in use from 1923 to 1960, depicts two sparrows on a mimosa branch.6.   The banknote signed by the third Governor,Dr M H de Kock, who was in office from 1 July 1945 to 30 June 1962. Five million coins have been minted and will go into circulation on Friday, 1 July 2011. Enquiries:Hlengani MathebulaHead: Strategy and Communications+27 12 313 4210+27 82 448 9219Hlengani.Mathebula@resbank.co.za
