As of 1 April 2004 the public will no longer be able to sell their Krugerrands to the Pretoria North Branch of the South African Reserve Bank. The head office of the South African Reserve Bank will take over the buying of Krugerrands from the public. However the public will still be able to sell their Krugerrands to other branches of the South African Reserve Bank, namely Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, East London, Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg branches. The Rand Refinery is authorised by the South African Treasury through the South African Reserve Bank to sell Krugerrands to primary distributors of the coins. Krugerrands are therefore available from banks, dealers, brokerage houses and other coin dealers. The price of the coins is based on the London afternoon gold fix. The first coin was minted in July 1967.
