The South African Reserve Bank's head office received a telephonic bomb threat from an anonymous caller between 12 and 12.30 today (Friday, 17 September 2004). The building was evacuated according to normal procedure. The national payment system's functions and the Bank's financial market operations were uninterrupted and the backup process was initiated immediately. Police and emergency services were alerted immediately. They searched the building and declared it safe. Staff returned to the building after approximately an hour.
