The South African Reserve Bank will henceforth disseminate changes in the country's total net gold and other foreign exchange reserves in its Monthly Release of Selected Data. This series will be included for the first time in data to be released on 29 September 1997.In the Monthly Release section on gold and other foreign reserves, only the changes in the gross and net reserves of the Reserve Bank have hitherto been disseminated. As from September the change in total net gold and other foreign reserves owing to balance of payments transactions will also be released. In addition to the change in net reserves of the Reserve Bank, the private banks' and government's contributions to changes in reserves are also included in the new series.The new series will not be available for the immediate past month, due to lags in the collection of comprehensive balance sheet information for the private banks. Historical values for the new series appear as series 5020M on page S-96 of the September 1997 Quarterly Bulletin of the South African Reserve Bank. Quarterly totals are also shown on page S-79, as series 5020K.The addition of the series should contribute to a more comprehensive picture of events related to the external sector of the South African economy.
