During the transition, the SARB recognised that continued reliance on repo auctions in a surplus-liquidity framework could potentially weaken quota effectiveness by reducing banks' incentives to source liquidity in the interbank market. Although this risk has not materialised, with repo demand remaining negligible, the SARB has decided to suspend the weekly main repo auction indefinitely from 30 October 2026. The notice further confirms that repo operations will remain part of the SARB’s liquidity management toolkit and may be utilised, at the SARB’s discretion, to address future liquidity needs or periods of market stress.
