Monetary Policy Committee Schools Challenge

Welcome to the South African Reserve Bank  (SARB) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Schools Challenge – a school competition which the SARB is running in partnership with the Department of Basic Education.

The Challenge is an exciting opportunity for Grade 12 learners with Economics as a subject to look into just a fewof the factors that the SARB needs to consider when it sets the country’s repurchase rate – a rate which affects every single person, business and organisation in the country, and which is determined by the SARB’s Monetary Policy Committee every two months.

Schools participating in the Challenge are given the chance to step into the shoes of the Monetary Policy Committee and, using  the SARB's  data, analyse whether South Africa’s repurchase rate should go up or down (and by howmuch) or if it should remain unchanged.
