The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) plans to issue upgraded banknotes with improved security features from 1 February 2005. The SARB has enhanced some of the security features and revised some of the designs on its currency in line with international best practice. The upgraded security features have been introduced in order to maintain public confidence by ensuring that South Africa’s currency utilises the latest technology which is internationally available. The design changes and upgraded security features will be made public on 17 January 2005, approximately two weeks before the upgraded banknotes are issued. This will coincide with an extensive public communication campaign to educate the public on the changes to the banknotes’ design and security features. The SARB has, for some time now, engaged in a campaign aimed at the commercial banks and the cash management and handling industry. The objective is to educate and train key personnel in the industry on the relevant changes to the design and security features. The current banknotes will remain legal tender alongside the upgraded banknotes and will continue to be accepted. The public is reminded that there is no need for anyone to deliberately change their money as a result of the introduction of the upgraded banknotes. The public will therefore continue to receive and transact in both the current and the upgraded banknotes in everyday use as from the beginning of February 2005. The SARB encourages the public to know and use the security features on the currency. The public is encouraged to familiarise themselves with the upgraded security features.
