Although the continual distribution for circulation by the Bank of the old R1, R2 and R5 banknotes has ceased, all existing South African R1, R2 and R5 banknotes remain legal tender in the Republic of South Africa. Accordingly, all banks are obliged to continue to accept these banknotes as legal tender in the Republic of South Africa.
